What Eating Disorder Treatment Can Include

Eating disorder recovery looks different for everyone and often requires a comprehensive approach that includes more than one type of support. Depending on your needs, eating disorder treatment at The Balanced Practice may include:

  • Therapy or psychotherapy to support the emotional, behavioural and psychological parts of recovery.
  • Nutrition counselling to support eating patterns, nourishment, food fears and nutrition rehabilitation.
  • Meal support or meal exposure to practice recovery skills with guidance.
  • Family support to help loved ones understand the eating disorder, respond with confidence and become part of the recovery process.
  • Care coordination with physicians or other healthcare providers when needed.

Which Eating Disorder Service Is Right for You?

Ottawa Eating Disorders | The Balanced Practice Inc | Ottawa, ON

You don’t need to know exactly what support you need before asking for help. Many people are unsure whether to start with therapy, nutrition counselling, family support or a more coordinated treatment pathway. Through the intake process, The Balanced Practice team will guide you to the support you need.

Eating disorder therapy may be the right starting point if

You want eating disorder support in Ottawa or virtually across Ontario for support with eating disorder thoughts, body image distress, anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional regulation, recovery motivation, relationships or relapse prevention.

Nutrition counselling may be the right starting point if

You want nutrition counselling in Ottawa or virtually across Ontario to support eating patterns, food fears, nutrition rehabilitation, digestive concerns, meal structure or rebuilding trust with food.

A coordinated eating disorder treatment pathway may be the right fit if

Eating disorders affect both mental health and your relationship with food, which is why most folks benefit from working with both a therapist and a dietitian. This kind of coordinated care is widely considered a best-practice approach and can help make treatment feel more connected, consistent and effective.

If you are experiencing fainting, chest pain, dehydration, severe restriction, rapid physical decline or another urgent health concern, please seek medical care as soon as possible.

Therapy and nutrition counselling can be important parts of eating disorder recovery, but they do not replace medical assessment or monitoring when it is needed.

Assessment

There’s no “right” way to start. Deciding to start is the biggest step.

Start scared. Start unsure. Start angry. Start messy. Just start. Your assessment is a safe space to show up as you are. During your first session, we’ll explore your story, what brings you here, and what you hope will change. It’s a chance for us to understand you beyond a diagnosis and collaborate on a care plan that makes sense for you.

Stage 1

Check List | The Balanced Practice Inc | Ottawa, ON

Service Offered

75-minute nutrition assessment and/or a 75-minute therapeutic assessment

(For kiddos and teenagers, we recommend parents participating in parts of the first session)

Stabilization

Healing starts with safety.

Think of this as our foundation. In this stage, we are working with your body, not against it. This phase is about calming the chaos and lowering the ED voice. We focus on building structure, safety, and consistency so your nervous system can come out of survival mode and begin to trust the process.

Stage 2

Stability | The Balanced Practice Inc | Ottawa, ON

Services Offered:

  • Weekly or biweekly 1:1 nutrition counselling and/or therapy
  • Family Support for parents and caregivers
  • Targeted courses to support stability

Recovery

Recovery is not about ticking boxes on a checklist..it’s about reclaiming your life.

This is the part where we dive deeper, together. It’s about understanding why the ED showed up in the first place, and learning to build a life that no longer needs it. In this stage, we’ll support you in connecting with who you really are, what matters to you, and what kind of life you want to create moving forward.

Stage 3

Recovery | The Balanced Practice Inc | Ottawa, ON

Services Offered:

  • Weekly or biweekly 1:1 nutrition counselling and/or therapy
  • Family Support for parents and caregivers
  • Targeted courses to support stability

Maintenance

You’ve done the hard work, now it’s time to live life fully!

Recovery doesn’t end at a milestone. It evolves. This stage is about strengthening your progress, navigating life’s twists and turns, and continuing to build a life that feels aligned with who you are and not who the eating disorder told you to be.

You might still need support at times (we’re here for that). Or you might feel ready to step back from care and integrate recovery in day-to-day life! Wherever you are, this is about trusting yourself more deeply, holding space for your values, and living your life fully.

Stage 4
